Ingredients

  • 4 x 340g packets golden buttercake
  • 8 eggs
  • 240g butter, softened
  • 3 cups milk
  • 1 1/2 quantities butter cream icing (see notes)
  • Yellow food colouring
  • Red food colouring

Decorations

  • 20 apple-flavoured sour straps
  • 8cm licorice strap
  • 1 strawberry-flavoured sour strap
  • 3 licorice allsorts (orange and white)
  • 1 round white licorice allsort mini
  • 1 tablespoon orange sprinkles

Equipment

  • You will need a 42cm x 58cm cake board.

Method

  • 1
Preheat oven to 180C/160C fan-forced. Grease two 5cm-deep, 21cm x 30cm (base) baking pans. Line bases and sides with baking paper, allowing a 2cm overhang on all sides.
  • 2
Make packet cakes following packet directions. Spread evenly into pans. Bake for 40 to 45 minutes or until a skewer inserted in the centre comes out clean. Turn out onto wire racks to cool completely.
  • 3
Make butter cream icing: Tint orange with yellow and red food colouring.
  • 4
Using a serrated knife, level cake tops. Place cakes, cut-side down, next to each other on bench covered with baking paper. Place paper pattern sheet over cakes (see box below left). Using a serrated knife, cut dinosaur from cake. Transfer dinosaur to board.
  • 5
Spread cake, including sides, with icing. Using the pattern as a guide, cut 23 stripes from apple sour strips. Using the picture as a guide, position stripes on cake. Cut licorice strap into thin strips. Position 2 strips to outline mouth. Cut remaining licorice strips into nine 1cm lengths and position as claws. Cut a 6.5cm tongue shape from strawberry sour strap. Position in mouth.Cut licorice allsorts in half diagonally. Position in mouth to form teeth. Position round licorice allsort to form an eye.
